Midsize SUV Sales In Canada July 2014 YTD

In July 2014, total GM Canada volume shot up 25% compared with July 2013, and the companys Lambda-platform large crossovers played a role in the companys gains.

1387 Buick Enclaves, Chevrolet Traverses, and GMC Acadias were sold last month, a 69% increase from the 821 sold in Canada in the year ago period.

Meanwhile, Ford sold 1263 Explorers plus another 422 copies of the Flex. Chrysler Canada reported only 210 Durango sales, the lowest total since December of last year, but also 1418 sales of the two-row Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Overall, the new vehicle market was up 11% in Canada in July 2014. The Enclave, Traverse, Durango, Edge, Explorer, Flex, Acadia, Grand Cherokee, CX-9, Murano, Pathfinder, 4Runner, Highlander, and Touareg all produced gains in excess of the markets July average.

The Honda Civic was Canadas best-selling car in 2014, the 17th consecutive year in which the Civic has topped Canadas car sales leaderboard. Although the Civic hasnt been Canadas best-selling vehicle overall since 2008, Civic volume in 2014 reached its highest point since then.

The Civic accounted for nearly 9% of all Canadian passenger car sales in 2014, up from just over 8% in 2013. As the car market stumbled - and the overall auto industry soared to record highs - Civic sales increased. Its top competitor, the Hyundai Elantra, slid 8%, but its fall wasnt sufficient for the surging Toyota Corolla to grab the number two spot.

Canadas top-selling midsize car in 2014 was the ninth-ranked Fusion. But like the second and third and fourth-ranked midsize cars, Fusion sales dropped in 2014.

Canadas leading subcompact was the Hyundai Accent. With 23,173 sales, the Accent sold more often in 2014 than at any time since 2010. Combined with the second-ranked subcompact, the Accent-platform-sharing Kia Rio, Hyundai-Kia sold 37,631 subcompacts in Canada in 2014.

Top 20 Best Selling SUVs In Canada September 2014

Ford Canada sold more than 5000 Escapes for the fifth consecutive month in September 2014 and thus outsold the surging Toyota RAV4 by 779 units. Year-to-date, the RAV4 trails the Escape by more than 13,000 units.

Canadas four top-selling utility vehicles collectively reported a year-over-year monthly improvement of 43% in September, a gain of 4597 units. At this time last year they accounted for 7.1% of all September new vehicle sales in Canada; that figure rose to 9.0% in September 2014.

Only four of Canadas 20 top-selling SUVs and crossovers failed to report year-over-year improvements last month, including the fifth and sixth-ranked Hyundai Santa Fe Sport and Dodge Journey.

The aging Journeys decline, 12.5% through the first nine months of 2014, is more than made up for at Chrysler Canada by the Jeep brand, where sales are up 60% this year. 24% of the vehicles sold by the Chrysler Group in 2014 have been Jeeps, up from 16.3% during the same period last year.

GCBC continues to showcase the Subaru Outback as a passenger car until at least the end of the year. If considered an SUV, the Outback would have ranked 19th in September with 936 sales, a 71% increase.

The Honda Civic is halfway to ending a 17th consecutive year as Canadas best-selling car, an impressive achievement considering the depth of competition faced by the Honda.

Sales of the Mazda 3, Canadas fourth-best-selling car, are up 8% this year. The 3 was Canadas second-best-selling car in 2010, and its a much better car now. In fact, GCBCs verdict, "The new Mazda 3 is the best compact car you can buy," suggests that the 3 is a challenging rival for the Civic, indeed. Yet the Civic has outsold the 3 by an average of 1644 units per month over the last six months.

The third-ranked Toyota Corolla was Canadas top-selling car in April 2014. Corolla volume in Canada is up 16% through the first half of 2014, but the Civic has outsold the Corolla by more than 5000 units already this year.

At this point one year ago, the best-selling car in Canada was the Hyundai Elantra. Elantra volume has decreased in 2014, and the Civic leads the second-ranked Elantra by 3760 units heading into July.

Its not just the top sellers that are movin on up, either. The 12th-ranked Nissan Versa ranked 28th among cars at 2013s halfway point. Hondas own Fit has moved up from the 37th spot to the 15th position, claiming 2781 more buyers in Honda showrooms than it had during the first six months of 2013.

Yet Civic sales are rising. We bring up the subject often in Canada, but only because Honda Canada has so aggressively pursued the title of Canadas best-selling car and succeeded in its pursuit with such consistency. Moreover, its not just the consistency, but the degree to which the Civic dominates that makes it a deserving headline grabber.

Surely other, more exciting and enticing cars deserve a note as well, right? Jaguar has sold 256 F-Types this year - its the brands best seller - and Chevrolet Corvette volume is nearly seven times stronger than it was last year.

Prior year figures now include the actual numbers from last year, not just the percentage increases/decreases from last year. It is believed that Tesla sold 61 copies of their Model S back in May 2014, but Tesla doesnt issue monthly sales reports. The ANDC estimate for Tesla June sales in Canada was 50 units.
