Large Luxury Car Sales In America February 2015 YTD

In February 2015, for the first time since September 2013, U.S. sales of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class decreased.

Year-over-year, S-Class volume decreased by 376 units in February. Its most direct competitors all posted February declines, as well, from the BMW 7-Series 5% drop to the Audi A8s 17% decrease.

BMWs 6-Series - a nameplate which also holds a coupe and convertible in its quiver - more than doubled its volume to 1237 units last month.

This explains why youll see the the A7 and CLS here but also with midsize luxury cars... because readers have wanted it both ways. Sales data for brands such as Aston Martin, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Lotus, Rolls-Royce etc. are unfortunately not broken down by model. ANDC estimates say sales for those brands in the first two months of 2015 were 206, 354, 126, 30, and 154, respectively. Tesla, unfortunately, doesnt release model-specific monthly U.S. sales data, but HybridCars.com estimates 1400 February Tesla sales, 2900 YTD.

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class was Canadas top-selling premium brand vehicle in January 2015, the first time the C-Class led the luxury field since January of last year.

The more interesting fact regarding the most popular premium brand vehicles in Canada last month relates to the limited number of cars on the top 15 list.

There are only four, as the third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, tenth, 12th, 13th, and 14th-best-selling premium brand vehicles in Canada in January 2015 were all utility vehicles.

One such utility vehicle was the new small crossover from Lexus, the NX. 380 copies of the NX200t and NX300h were sold in Canada last month. Combined, the NX and better-selling RX accounted for 64% of Toyota Canadas Lexus volume last month.

For the purposes of the above list, premium brands include Acura, Audi, BMW, Cadillac, Infiniti, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lexus, Lincoln, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, and Volvo. Brands like Aston Martin, Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Lotus dont report specific monthly sales data. Maserati only reports brand totals. Buick has been excluded with a bunch of other automakers that dont sell vehicles with base prices higher than $45K.

$50,000 CDN (before delivery) is an arbitrary borderline, but if GCBC was to follow this new system of designating only expensive vehicles as luxury vehicles, $50K seemed like a safe place to begin - it equals the average U.S. new car transaction price plus $15,000, plus another $5000 to account for Canadian increases. Plenty of less expensive vehicles with specific models feature prices above $50,000 - M, RS, and AMG models come to mind, specifically - but in the case of this list, we know that none of the registrations were of cars priced at $35,900, as would be the case with the BMW 320i, which costs less than a Hyundai Santa Fe 2.0T Limited.
The new Cadillac CTS sedans base price is above $50,000, but not the base price for other cars in the CTS lineup. Yet. Total CTS sales in January: 45.

Top 15 Best Selling Luxury Vehicles In America October 2014

Of October 2014s 15 best-selling vehicles in America with base prices above $45,000, five were GM products, four were Mercedes-Benzes, and three were BMWs.

BMW led the list with the 5-Series, though 5er sales decreased in October. Indeed, sales of the three leading $45K+ vehicles all declined year-over-year, while four other members of the top 15 posted decreased volume compared with October 2013, as well.

Among all premium brand vehicles, regardless of price, BMW was again in front, although the 5-Series fell to sixth place when less costly vehicles are taken into account. The Acura TLX surged forward once again with continually rising sales: 4890 TLX sedans were sold in October, nearly double the total achieved by the TL and TSX a year ago.

Americas leading premium brand car line, BMWs 3-Series and 4-Series, finished the month 49,224-unit year-to-date lead over the next-best-selling premium brand car, Lexuss ES, and a 23,793-unit year-to-date lead over the next-best-selling premium brand vehicle, Lexuss RX. The RX leads the Acura MDX in the luxury SUV standings by 30,641 units. The Cadillac SRX is 8284 units back of the Acura heading into November.

$45,000 USD (before delivery) is an arbitrary borderline, but if GCBC was to follow this system of designating only expensive vehicles as luxury vehicles, adding approximately $15,000 to the average new car transaction price seemed like a fitting place to begin. Plenty of less expensive vehicles with specific models feature prices above $45,000 - M, RS, and AMG models come to mind, specifically - but in the case of the second list, we know that none of the registrations were of cars priced at $32,750, as would be the case with the new BMW 320i, which costs less than a Honda Accord V6 Touring. The biggest problem with a $45,000 minimum price of entry? Cars like the Cadillac XTS, which starts at $44,600.

In October, Infiniti sold 1258 copies of the Q50s predecessor, the G sedan, and 496 Q60s to go along with 2964 Q50s.
* BMW USA, not GoodCarBadCar, has chosen to combine sales of the 3-Series and 4-Series. GCBC combines sales of the Audi A4 and Audi A4 Allroad. None-Allroad sales were down 25% to 2268 in October.
Cadillacs new CTS - 3096 October sales - starts at $45,100, but the lingering CTS Coupe is a sub-$40K car, and the wagon starts at $42,195.

U.S. Auto Sales Brand Rankings - October 2014 YTD

As the number of entry luxury car nameplates increases, so too does the volume generated by the overall entry luxury car segment. November sales of cars like the BMW 3-Series, Audi A3, Lexus IS, and Mercedes-Benz C-Class jumped 20% in Canada.

Lexus began selling the RC coupe last month as a partner to the IS and GS sedans. 41 of the 56 sold were RC350s, the other 15 were 467-horsepower, $80,800 F models.

No premium brand car sells as often as BMWs 3-Series. 894 copies were sold in November, good enough to make the 3-Series family Canadas 19th-best-selling car overall, just behind the Nissan Micra, Canadas most affordable new car.

Overall, BMW car sales declined in November as the 4-Series gains werent enough to make up for 3-Series losses and the 5-Series, 6-Series, 7-Series, and Z4 all reported declines. 1556 BMW passenger cars were sold in Canada in November, a 2% loss. BMW car sales are up 1.4% this year. BMWs SAVs are up 6.9% to 13,734 units, 45% of the brands total volume. Mercedes-Benz Canada sold 1717 cars in November, a 1.4% decline.

Total Lincoln car sales were down 53%. Cadillacs cars rose 3%. Acura cars, helped along by the new TLX, jumped 55%. Jaguars four car nameplates combined for a 3% improvement. Infinitis cars were down 5.5% to 273 units. Lexus car volume was up 0.3%, a gain of two units. Porsche car volume was up 17%. Volvo car sales slid 15%. Audi, with 1087 car sales, a 28% increase, was the only premium automarker to join BMW and Mercedes-Benz with more than 1000 car sales in November.
